Dielectric Behavior of Nonspherical Cell Suspensions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent experiments revealed that the dielectric dispersion spectrum of fission yeast cells in a suspension was mainly composed of two sub-dispersions. The low-frequency sub-dispersion depended on the cell length, whereas the highfrequency one was independent of it. The cell shape effect was qualitatively simulated by an ellipsoidal cell model. However, the comparison between theory and experiment was far from being satisfactory. In an attempt to close up the gap between theory and experiment, we considered the more realistic cells of spherocylinders, i.e., circular cylinders with two hemispherical caps at both ends. We have formulated a Green’s function formalism for calculating the spectral representation of cells of finite length. The Green’s function can be reduced because of the azimuthal symmetry of the cell. This simplification enables us to calculate the dispersion spectrum and hence access the effect of cell structure on the dielectric behavior of cell suspensions. متن کاملEffect of ionic mobility on the enhanced dielectric and electro-optic susceptibility of suspensions: Theory and experiments
It is a well-known fact that the presence of charged dispersed solid particles in an electrolyte solution considerably modifies the dielectric permittivity and conductivity of the system as compared to that of the pure dispersing medium. The enhanced conductivity of the electrical double layer, and its polarization under the action of the external field are responsible for that fact. A related ...
متن کاملThe dielectric behavior of the living cell suspensions
In the limit of small concentrations and weak applied electric fields, the dielectric permittivity of suspensions of arbitrarily shaped, shelled and charged particles is calculated. It is proved that the dielectric behavior at low frequencies is dominated by the effects of the diffusion of the free charges on the shell surfaces. Our theoretical formula is valid in the low range of frequencies (...
متن کاملElectrorotation in graded colloidal suspensions.
Biological cells can be treated as composites of graded material inclusions. In addition to biomaterials, graded composites are important in more traditional materials science. In this paper, we investigate the electrorotation spectrum of a graded colloidal suspension in an attempt to discuss its dielectric properties. For that, we use the recently obtained differential effective dipole approxi...
متن کاملBroadband Dielectric Spectra of Spheroidal Hematite Particles
In this paper, we contribute new data on the dielectric dispersion of suspensions of two kinds of spheroidal hematite particles (R-Fe2O3). One of the samples consisted of nearly spherical particles, and the other included almost spindle-like particles. We intended to demonstrate the unique potential applications of dielectric dispersion measurements on the characterization of the electrical dou...
